It’s the time of year when we’re all looking for a bargain. It’s also the time of year – despite the cold weather – when many of us travel to see family and friends a little outside our normal area. So here are few tips on some travel savings.
National Express Coach
National Express have a variety of great offers when you travel with them. They range from coachcards and passes to cheap fares and discounts at top attractions. For the over-60s there’s a senior coachcard. For £10 a year the coachcard gives you a third off all travel all year round. Buying a card is no problem and all you have to do is present proof that you are over 60. With the exception noted below, there are no restrictions to time or day of travel, so – if you choose – you can use the senior coachcard at peak time. The only exception to the anytime, anywhere rule is that discounts do not apply to services to or from airports. Once you have your coachcard you need to present it every time you make a journey and would like the discount.
National Express also offer to help passengers with their bags and a ticket guarantees a seat, so there’s no worry about having to stand during the journey. You can book online, by phone or at ticket machines or counters at any National Express outlet.
Rail Travel
You can also get a third off rail travel with a Senior Railcard. This is also available to anyone aged 60 or over. This is more expensive than the coachcard at £28 for a one-year card, or £65 for a three-year card. The senior railcard also gives discounts on hotels, restaurants and days out. For example, you can enjoy offers like two-for-one meals at restaurants including Cafe Rouge, Loch Fyne, Prezzo, Malmaison and Hotel du Vin & Bistro. You need a valid passport or driving licence to be able to get a senior railcard.
Air Travel
Airlines don’t give much away to older travellers. You could try “over 50s experts” Staysure, or Saga, of course. Saga Holidays is an online travel operator specialising in travel for over-50s. The Saga Holidays site offers various types of flights, plus accommodation, tours, volunteer/ resort/ short break holidays, river/ sea cruises, concert/ sports tickets and travel extras such as insurance and car hire.
Cruises
For those of you who want to get away from it all, then a cruise could be your favoured option. Often aimed at the older market anyway, there are plenty of cruises on offer. Saga had its own cruise ship, and Staysure claims to offer the widest choice of cruises, to hundreds of destinations around the world – all at great value prices.
Wherever you go and however you travel, have a wonderful festive season.
