Age UK helps to keep older people warm

Age UK’s campaign to help older people keep their homes heated during winter comes as a result of a recent survey indicating that 1.7 million British households are in fuel poverty. In addition, two out of 5 people over 60 worry about the cost of central heating and their ability to stay warm during the cold winter months.

The Spread the Warmth initiative is aimed at raising awareness of the situation faced by a large number of older people, as well as letting these people know that help is available.

This help comes in the form of helping pensioners with installing draft excluders and electric blankets, providing advice on financial claims they can use to cover their energy costs, and many other related services.

When the government’s Comprehensive Spending Review was under discussion in October, many older people feared that their winter fuel allowances would be reduced. However, to the relief of many, George Osborne did not announce any cuts of cold weather payments and heating assistance.

Age UK is doing important work in ensuring that older people remain safe and heated during the cold winter months. The ageing British population will mean an increase in the importance of this work.
