The Archbishop of York Dr John Sentamu has commented in an open letter to the Prime Minister both on the need to address the needs of older people in society and the necessity of bridging the gap between the generations.
According to Money Telegraph, Dr Sentamu said that modern society sets the old against the young in "mutual incomprehension". He wrote in an open letter to the Prime Minister that compared to other cultures British society does not do as well in its efforts to care for elderly people and that there is a crisis with the current funding available to enable it to do so.
The Archbishop recommended that the Government take note of the advice given by the Dilnot Commission to resolve a "serious social crisis".
The recommendations state that an individual should meet the first £35,000 costs of their care after which the State would provide.
Dr Sentamu also said that people of all age groups are able to contribute to society, “through which they can both contribute from the wisdom of their experience and sustain a sense of being useful to others, and therefore of purpose.” and that older people should be encouraged to remain active even if not on an economic basis.
